How We Sort and Grade for Refurbishment Differently Than for ITAD

Leon Lindblad |

When it comes to the IT refurbishment industry, sorting and grading are the cornerstone of efficiency and quality. While the ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) sector focuses primarily on value recovery for devices at the end of their lifecycle, refurbishment grading is all about maximizing potential for resale and extending product life. At The Refurb Company, we’ve developed a unique approach to sorting and grading, optimized for the refurbishment process, ensuring precision and efficiency.

The Difference in Grading Philosophy

ITAD grading typically centres around compliance, secure data destruction, and scrap value. Grading for refurbishment, on the other hand, emphasizes cosmetic and functional quality to identify devices with the most potential for restoration and resale. Our grading system bridges this gap, tailoring the process to deliver top-tier refurbished products.

Refurbishment Grades Overview:

  • Grade A: Minimal cosmetic damage; only requires a skin and keyboard print.
  • Grade AB/AS: Grade A devices requiring battery or screen refurbishment.
  • Grade B: Moderate cosmetic damage needing repair (e.g., dents, cracks) to elevate to Grade A.
  • Grades D/F: Significant damage or functional faults, often not viable for refurbishment.

This precise segmentation helps us allocate resources effectively, ensuring devices are either refurbished to meet our high standards or responsibly retired.

The Sorting and Process Flow

Devices undergo a rigorous first audit (the Aiken Test) and are sorted into three main categories:

  1. Grade A/B Devices: These are prioritized for minor upgrades like skins and keyboard overlays.
  2. Grade AS/BS Devices: Focused on screens requiring removal or replacement.
  3. Grade D/F Devices: Set aside for parts recovery or recycling.

Our approach is supported by a structured workflow using specialized tools, environmentally controlled environments, and highly trained technicians.

Why This Matters

The cosmetic appeal of refurbished devices is more than just an aesthetic choice—it significantly impacts resale value. Buyers associate a well-maintained appearance with reliability, and small cosmetic upgrades, like our Skinz™ and SticKeys™, can elevate a device from Grade B to Grade A with minimal investment.

For example, a laptop with surface scratches can achieve a “like-new” finish with a carbon-fiber textured Skinz™. This transformation allows us to command premium prices while ensuring customer satisfaction.

Setting Industry Standards

Our innovative grading system and focus on refurbishment-specific workflows set us apart from traditional ITAD processes. It’s not just about managing e-waste but creating value for customers, reducing environmental impact, and driving profitability through smarter refurbishment practices.
